Hey friends! I thought I might share a little about the program I have been following for food and eating since January 1st. Since many of you are in the planning phase of a major life event, this might be worthwhile information to have.
The program I joined is called FASTer Way to Fat Loss (FWTFL) which combines intermittent fasting, carb cycling, macro counting, and workouts. It sounds overwhelming and it is (for about a week) which is fine, because the first week of the program is centered around preparing yourself with the information you need for the program.
Joe and I went to Austin, Texas for a special trip for my (gulp) 50th birthday in November. I saw a picture of myself after that trip and was not happy. I realized that I was heading quickly to 50 and not looking or feeling my best. It was a little alarming, but I headed straight into the holidays not wanting to think about it.
Then scrolling through Instagram one morning I saw a picture of a woman that I follow and she looked great! She was sharing her story of following the FWTFL and it sounded like something worth trying. I signed up over the holidays and the program started on New Year's Day. Joe signed up with me and we have been following ever since.
Joe lost about 20 lbs. in 3 weeks - of course, he's a guy. My weight loss was a little slower, BUT it has happened! I have lost 12 lbs. and many inches, but more importantly, I feel great!
If you have done Whole 30, this is like Whole 30-Light.
If you have done Keto, you have a couple of Keto-like days each week, but then you get to have carbs.
It gets a little complicated, but there are basically 5 areas of focus in the FWTFL program. All of these pieces work together.
FOODS & MACROS: Whole foods are preferred. At least for the first 6 week round, I eliminated processed sugars, bread and dairy. This wasn't that hard at all and I found some recipes and some people to follow on social media that were really helpful! Tracking macros is where they almost lost me. Foods are tracked using the MyFitnessPal app. The free version is fine. The "macros" are macro-nutrients; protein, fat and carbs. The app tracks these automatically and so many foods and restaurant foods are already listed making this much easier than I thought it would be.
FASTING: I thought that not eating until noon was going to be impossible. I have always been a person that needed to eat something to start the day. Fasting was much easier than I thought it would be!
WORKOUTS: The workouts are great. They are strategically paired with each day's macros. There are different workout levels available and you can choose whichever one you want depending on your situation. There is a gym workout, at-home workout and a low impact workout to choose from. I have done both the at-home workouts and the low impact workouts and, for the most part, I really enjoy them.
MINDSET: This is the part that has kept me going! The FWTFL mindset is "progress over perfection". I have always been the person in the past that would beat myself up if I didn't follow a diet perfectly. If I messed up, I would just bag the whole thing. I would tell myself I would start over the next day and I never would.
GROUPS: When you join the program, you are added to a private facebook group. Each group is set up so that you are with people that are in the same place on the FWTFL program as you are. It's a great place to ask questions, share tips and for accountability! The accountability piece is a real motivator. When you post your macros at the end of the day and you hit your numbers, everyone cheers you on. When you post your macros and you don't hit your numbers, everyone cheers you on. The coaches are positive and encouraging! There is no one telling you that you didn't do well, they may suggest things you could try, but it is always positive.
Join The Next Round Of FWTFL!
If you’re looking for a change, consider joining FWTFL for the next round! I did a second round and then moved on to the VIP Program. I'm still working towards my goal, but I am SO close. Honestly, once I hit my weight goal, I think I'll continue. I might not be as strict with the program, but I plan to keep tracking my macros and watch what I eat. Ultimately, I want to be healthy as I get older. I want to be able to move easily and be here for my family. So, I'll stick with it.
Feel free to reach out if you have questions. If you sign up, let me know and I'll forward my favorite tips that I've learned over the past 5 months, some of my favorite recipes and 3 of my weekly menus.
