Are Wedding Programs Necessary?Wedding Program Q&A

Are wedding programs necessary?
Not necessary, but really nice to have.
What is a wedding program?
A wedding program can take on many forms. It can be a folded sheet of paper, a beautiful pocket-sized booklet with a bow, a fan, etc. The program is an opportunity for you to communicate to your guests. This is the place to introduce your bridal party, provide instruction, and explain different aspects of the ceremony.
What is included in a wedding program?
If you are wondering what to put in a wedding program, it will typically have 3 main parts:
The introduction or cover. At a minimum, this will include your names and the date. It can also include the ceremony location and design elements that you are carrying through your wedding stationery.
Your wedding party. Start with your Officiant, your Parents, and members of the wedding party. These are who to include in your program. If you have any musicians or soloists, it is nice to include them as well.
The outline of your wedding ceremony. If you are having a very simple ceremony, an outline is sufficient. If you are having a religious or inter-faith ceremony, you will want to explain some of the aspects of the ceremony that your guests may not be familiar with.
In addition, the wedding program is a great place to provide some important information to your guests. Some things you may want to include are:
The address of the reception location, if it is different from the ceremony location.
Any instructions you want to provide your guests. If you are requesting that your guests not take photos or if you want a screen-free ceremony, this is a great place to let your guests know.
If there is a period of time between the ceremony and the reception, providing some ideas for people to pass the time until the reception is really nice to pass along to your guests.
A note of thanks to your family, other wedding party members and guests.
A note in loving memory of an important person or persons that will be very sadly missed on the wedding day.
How many programs should I have printed?
This is always the question. Take the number of guests that have replied, add in the number of guests that haven't replied yet and then add 10 or 15 programs to be safe. This way you can be sure that you have enough programs for everyone who wants one.
When should I order my wedding programs?
Plan ahead! 8-12 weeks before your wedding date is the perfect time to order your programs.
There are so many ways to create a wedding program. Start by communicating with your officiant, they should have an outline of the ceremony to work from along with choices that they will want you to make about your ceremony. From there, work with your stationer to determine what will work best for your specific wedding needs and style.
