Letterpress Stationery for a Wedding at Ash Mill Farm
Updated: Feb 19
Samantha Mitchell, a Philadelphia based makeup artist, fell in love with Ash Mill Farm; a peaceful, working sheep farm and bed and breakfast located just outside of New Hope. Samantha envisioned a rustic, natural fête with elegant, simple details and lush, textured fall florals in an array of jewel tones and pops of thistle blue. Samantha brought together a team of wedding professionals to make her vision a reality with Marsha Lyn Photography and Di Images.
With sprawling acres of picturesque meadow and a forest moving through autumn's magic, an outdoor fire pit, and a handful of cozy rooms, Ash Mill Farm was the perfect place to gather and celebrate the start of a journey! The ceremony took place in the upper room of the Grand House which has a pitched roof of exposed beams whose worn edges hold light in long painted lines. A stain glass light fixture hung over the altar, a simple high table draped with linens, greenery, and candles. Guests sat in espresso lacquer chiavari chairs which created contrast where they met the lighter original hardwood floors.
For the main invitation I created a custom illustration of the Grand Manor House, the hub of Ash Mill Farm. The Grand House has so much character, both inside and out! The interior features murals of the bucolic landscape and unique wood carvings including the ram post cap at the base of the main staircase. The invitation shown here has been digitally printed with terra cotta ink on cotton stock. Compare to the first photograph whose pieces are letterpress printed.
What is a letterpress invitation? Letterpress is a printing art form where skill and elegance unite to create something truly beautiful and unique. There are few moments in life we reserve for something as artful as communicating with those we love through letterpress correspondence. The paper used in letterpress is thick and somewhat soft; allowing a plate to indent the letterpress invitation design into the paper, making it pop. A letterpress piece is a truly tactile experience making it more luxurious than digital printing. Letterpress also adds to that old world feel we were drawing on with the historic setting.
The stationery color palette was composed of bitter chocolate brown, deep jewel red, papaya, and warm white. The stationery pieces were based around the gorgeous florals by Ruby Rivers Florals.
The pearl envelope liner was the finishing element that pulled everything together. It had all the colors and the botanical style illustrations tied in with the old world mood while the metallic paper added a luster of pearl to the invitation suite of soft, luxurious letterpress printed pieces and calligraphed papers.
Adding that one metallic pearl paper with liner printed added polish and tied in the colors, pulling the whole suite together!
Cocktails, dinner, and dancing were outside. We create a signature cocktail sign with watercolor illustrations backed by a papaya colored stock. Dinner menus doubled as place settings with hand calligraphed place cards by Caitlin Jane Calligraphy tied with a thin bitter chocolate leather strapping to dinner menus. Menus feature the custom venue illustration of the Grand House and tied in beautifully with the floral arrangements. Table numbers were printed on luxe handmade deckled edge paper for that soft, finishing touch.
Such a pleasure to work with the following creatives to make this beautiful day a reality!
